Lymphedema

Lymphedema most commonly occurs when the lymphatic vessels or nodes are damaged, blocked, or removed. Because the fluid cannot drain properly, it backs up into the surrounding tissues. Common causes include cancer treatments (surgery or radiation therapy that removes or scars lymph nodes), severe injuries, infections, or tumors. Rarely are people born with an underdeveloped or abnormal lymphatic system.

Lymphedema is the swelling of your extremity (arm or leg), feeling of heaviness, limited range of motion, fibrosis of the skin, and potentially recurring skin infections. It is treated with compression wrapping or garments, specialized lymph drainage massage, skin care and exercises.

Your lymphatic system is a critical part of your immune system that circulates lymph fluid throughout the body's lymph vessels and filters it through lymph nodes. Lymph vessels have little valves that prevent the fluid from pooling or going backwards. Your lymph nodes are the body's filter—trapping and destroying bacteria, viruses, and abnormal cells.

For Life Therapy evaluates and treats lymphedema and can assist with any treatment that fits your needs.
